The Media Department at USAL University participated in “The National Championship for Lebanon’s Universities Debates – 2024” which is organized by SMART Center in partnership with “Discussion, Debate, Dialogue” Community, and in cooperation with the “Qatar Debates” Center.
The team, composed of students Heba Dhaini, Rawan Horchi, and Roa Sharafeddine, ranked second among Lebanon’s universities after taking part in three rounds, in which the result of the national championship was finally announced.
The team was qualified to represent Lebanon and its universities in the Seventh International Championship for the Universities Debates in Arabic in Qatar. The debate will take place in the fourth week of May, 2024.
It is worth noting that the universities debate is a global event that gathers students from different countries in Doha to debate in Arabic about the most important social and international problems and contemporary issues. This championship grants the debating individuals a chance to get acquainted with each other, exchange expertise, create bridges of communication based on dialogue and logic, and raise the rank of Arabic language as an enriching civilizational mediator.
The championship this year is expected to attract more than 600 participants from more than 50 countries, some of which will be debating while others will be judges. Teams will be experiencing fervent competition for five days during which various contemporary topics that are in the center of interest of the Arab youth will be discussed. Such topics include social justice, economic development, and environmental sustainability.
At its beginning, the championship included more than 24 teams from about 15 universities in Lebanon. Those teams participated in the preliminary round in which 16 teams qualified for later rounds.
Qualifications took place on January 27th in which every team participated in three rounds before announcing the result that qualified the team to represent Lebanon in the Seventh International Championship for the Universities Debates in Arabic language in Qatar 2024.
The university congratulates its students on their fruitful efforts and wishes that they would pass the international championship in Qatar with success and distinction.
